Detent valve positions

A directional control valve with detent is a type of hydraulic or pneumatic valve used to control the flow of fluid (liquid or gas) in a specific direction and lock it into a fixed position when not controlled.

Here are some more details about this type of valve

A detent actuator is place at the opposite side of the spool of dcv. Is install to a valve such as: a manual actuated, lever valve. The spool  returns to the neutral position by operating the manual actuator in the opposite direction.

The detent is a locking device that keeps the spool in the desired position. It is comprise of two notches for a two position valve, and three notches for a three position valve. A notch is A  V-shape cut to the element which moves and keeps the spool as required from operator. A ball with a spring is located in the notch to stop the spool from moving.

Function of detent actuator

When the manual actuator is operate the ball with the spring is push of the notch and the spool changes position. The ball enters the next notch and locks the spool to wanted position.  The operation is repeat and moves the spool back to its original position.

Therefore detent position is a preset position maintain by holding device acting on the flow direction elements of a directional control valve.

To conclude
  • A detent maintains a specific position to which it had been set;
  • A ball with the spring, lock the spool into position required;
  • Detent comprise 2 to 3 notches or v-shape cut to element which moves and keeps the spool as required from operator.
