Oil Filters

Oil Filters

Through this page, I try to make a short description about filters although the subject is well know. If google it sure can find some good information about it.

Even though the subject is widely known it will be shown more deeply information from source, where I learned and understand this hydraulic component.

Over 70% of  hydraulic system failure are due to contamination.  Contamination is dirt from the tank and particles caused by wearing out of the components themselves.  Properly sized, installed and maintained filters play a key role in the hydraulic system.

For more information about transmission of pressure in a confined body overview my TrainingCloud concept – What is a hydraulic system?

Filters installation in a hydraulic system:

  • A sump strainer installed to the end of pump suction line, the pump is of the fixed displacement type. Is considered a suction filter so enters in this category.
  • Between the tank and the pump  as a suction filter
  • After the pump as pressure filter
  • In the return line of the system as a return filter.

The filter has to be easily accessible and regularly cleaned.  More details about maintenance will follow in Maintenance Chapter.

Uses of four filters will not occur very often in practice because would cause a lot of pressure loss which generates heat. Installations of one or two filters in the hydraulic system provide the optimum solution.

Oil FIlters
  • Over 70% of hydraulic system malfunction are due to contamination;
  • Use of more than two filters cause pressure loss in the hydraulic system;
  • A optimum hydraulic system it will be used one or two filters;
  • The location of oil filters to be considered where expensive or sensitive equipment is installed.
